On this episode…

Special show today!

We have a very special guest taking the trip Down the Rabbit Hole with us:

  • Prof. Horia Pop – Professor of Computer Science at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca.

We started the show by asking Prof. Horia Pop a definition of artificial intelligence after it we found out the difference between week and strong AI’s.

Throughout the talk we arrive to a point where discuss the three laws of Robotics from Asimov:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

During all this talk Prof. Pop also gave us some examples of AI’s based on the famous Sci-Fi show Star Trek describing some of the AI’s that appear on the show (ST:TOS = Star Trek: The Original Series | Star Trek: The Next Generation):

  • ST:TOS, Mr. Spock – non-human humanoid, analytical and non-emotional intelligence, very comfortable with himself, humans strive to understand him.
  • ST:TNG, Lt.Cmd. Data – android, artificial intelligence, striving to become more human, while humans are more comfortable with themselves
  • ST:TNG and following, The Borg – cybernetic implants possibly the next step of human evolution on earth.

We couldn’t miss talking about book, movies and other sci-fi and science related ideas to Artificial Intelligence, like Terminator, I Robot, Ex machina, Destination: Void, etc.

Check out the full episode, we guarantee you will enjoy it and check back next week for the second part, the science part of Rise of the Machines!
